This is the third race of the Winter Series aka Sundowner organised by Takapuna Boating Club and Akarana Paddling Club. The race is open to any kayak/waka/paddle boards as long as they are seaworthy. They are races for fun but the level is high. I did the first race alone on an Epic V7 ( • Sunday Sundowners - surfski & sup clubs race ) and ended last of the long race. I was still happy by the result considering the top paddlers racing there and the fact I had the only plastic surfski there. I didn't join the second race because I was on holiday with my family and couldn't train, plus I managed to wound my elbow quite well and it was recovering ok... Because of this I decided to do the third race on a double sea kayak. My daughter not really wanting to race in the cold, my friend Nick still recovering from covid, it was eventually my wife who paddled with me. She is into paddle boards recreationally, but really not into sea kayak/surfski paddling. I believe it was just the 4th time she paddled the Mirage. The Mirage 730 is a very long kayak (730 cm x 58.5 cm / 24 feet x 23 inches) and our car is a tiny Suzuki Swift that's nearly half of its length, so we decided to paddle to the race start, from St Heliers to Okahu Bay (about 4.5 km / 2.8 miles). We paddled it in 40mn saving our energy for the race but even with a light paddle my wife started to feel tired because she isn't used to paddling a kayak and all the different muscles used. I was absolutely fine and it was a good warmup. We had 45mn to wait for the race. We were the only sea kayak! In all we were 42 paddlers (surfski, sup and waka). We planned to do the short race. It was funny to see some people watching us on the start line. I was actually surprised to see how well we did at the start, considering our kayak was heavy (37kg / 82lbs), and we had a massive railblaza trolley in the hatch (5kg / 11lbs) plus the bilge pumps, paddle floats, dry bags etc. At 42kg / 92lbs we were probably from 2 to 4 times heavier than the competition 😂 The race went well and we finished 2nd of four in the short race (one lap vs two for the long race). The distance was exactly 4.23km / 2.62miles in 26:54 so our average speed was a bit more than 9.4km/h or 5.85mph.
