Lt General Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller had an incredible military career as a US Marine. We look at the lesser known military medals he was awarded during his early career serving in Haiti and Nicaragua during the Banana Wars. Puller would also serve with the Horse Marines at the US Legation in Peking, China. Chesty Puller would study at Virginia Military Institute, drop out and then enlist in the US Marine Corps in 1918. Like the British Royal Marines, the United States Marine Corps are considered an elite of the Armed Forces. Puller is often considered the iconic Marine and the embodiment of USMC toughness and leadership. Although famous for being awarded 5 Navy Crosses, Puller would, in his early career, receive a Haitian Campaign Medal, Second Nicaraguan Campaign Medal and China Service Medal. We explore these medals as well as his early years campaigning with the United States Marine Corps. Sources: Marine! The Life of Chesty Puller (Burke Davis), USAMM, USMCU, National Archives.
