Trent McCleary was hit in the throat with a Slap SHOT which fractured his larynx and caused a collapsed lung. This was one of the Worst Injuries seen in the NHL! The NHL Montreal Canadien's star took a puck to the throat while trying to block a shot from a Philadelphia Flyers defensemen. This was ultimately a career ending injury as Trent was unable to return to play following complications of his injury. Support the Channel: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sonamspo... They used their fingers to dislocate his jaw and hold his windpipe open. They were rushed by ambulance to Montreal General Hospital straight to the operating room where Trent received an emergency tracheotomy and a chest tube for a collapsed lung. The procedure was performed with his equipment and skates still on. Ultimately, Trent recovered and attempted to go back to playing. Unfortunately he was unable to do so as he was becoming short of breath. Medical examination revealed that his airway was 15% narrower than before his injury. Common symptoms of a fractured larynx include: stridor, respiratory distress, dysphonia, dysphagia, odynophagia, and hemoptysis. Acute complications include: upper airway obstruction and asphyxia, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, hematoma, infection, and death. Chronic complications include: vocal cord paralysis, hoarseness, recurrent granulation formation, supraglottic stenosis, glottic stenosis, subglottic or tracheal stenosis, recurrent laryngeal nerve dysfunction, and chronic aspiration. Had it not been for the quick actions of the medical team, Trent may have very well succumbed to his injuries. I am a resident doctor training to become a sports medicine specialist.
