Almost Zero Touch Mac Deployment using Jamf Connect and Azure- University of San Diego Demo

Almost Zero Touch Mac deployment viaJamf Connect and Microsoft Azure. This video is primarily a tech demonstration and progress report for my organization’s leadership, as well as training material for the rest of the team here at USD. This is not a completed product. This at best a beta. We have a few glitches to work out, like FileVault implementation, suppression of excess notifications and bypassing the secondary password screen..but we’re almost there! “Zero Touch Deployment” solves one of the biggest issues that IT departments encounter when dealing with remote workers. How do you get them to do their initial sign in? From the beginning of remote work until now, you basically had three options. Option 1: Ask the person for their password, set the machine up your local network then ship it to that user. The obvious issue here is that asking someone for their password is really bad, and you should never do it. You should also never hire people that give their passwords to anyone that asks 🤷 Option 2: That user must come to your local network, do their initial sign in locally, then take the computer home with them. This is basically how it’s always been done. The obvious issue is that it’s really hard on your remote user who might live thousands of miles away or in a different country. It’s also expensive to fly every remote user back and forth, and that travel time comes with all kinds of liability issues as well. It would be reallt beneficial to the user, the business and the IT department if we could find a better way. Option 3: Give that user a local account instead of a domain account, but this comes with all kinds of issues and complications when the user wants to connect to organization network resources and it effectively makes the computer nearly impossible for the IT department to manage the device You can also use the local account to connect to a VPN and use some command line tricks to do that initial sign in, but depending on the computer literacy level of the end user, this could be quite an ordeal, it could take 20 minutes or 4 hours. Just yikes! Also, this might work on windows but i dont think this method would work on a mac . Doing this at scale is time consuming, frustrating and problematic. Now thanks to Zero Touch, there is option 4: Bypass all of the above, with Jamf Connect and Azure and a lot of terminal and scripting magic. This entire process can be automated and done remotely. The user never has to give out their password. They never have to travel anywhere, and there is no time consuming tech support call. The only limiting factor is the speed of the user’s home internet. We are also working on a Windows version of Zero Touch I would like to give special thanks to Richard Purves. We saw his presentation at Jamf Nation User Conference 2022, and the information given there put us months or even a whole year ahead of development time for this. We can’t thank him enough.
