At Sandwich Harbour, the OCN rescue team found yet another entangled seal, this time, wrapped in a massive ball of snoek fishing line. The young female was thin and weakened. She had clearly struggled for days or weeks, unable to move freely or hunt properly. This kind of fishing line is used in hand-line snoek fishing. When the line tangles, as it often does, fishermen don’t take time to sort it out. It’s faster and more profitable to cut it off and throw it overboard. Fresh line is cheap. Old line is disposable. And there are no regulations to stop this shortcut. That’s how a seal ends up nearly strangled on a remote beach.
