"You'll Never Find Another Love like Mine". Louis Allen Rawls (Chicago, December 1, 1933 – Los Angeles, January 6, 2006) was an American soul, gospel, blues and jazz singer. During his school days he was friends with the soul singer Sam Cooke, with whom he sang in a gospel choir in the 1950s: the Teenage Kings of Harmony. After his military service he sang with the group Pilgrim Travelers. During a tour in 1958 he had a serious car accident. He was in a coma for 5½ days afterwards. In 1962 he got a contract with record company Capitol Records. His first LP that same year was Stormy Monday, a jazz album with soul and jazz pianist Les McCann. The next two albums on Capitol, Black and Blue and Tobacco Road, were with a big band and were also successful. Rawls returned to jazz several times, including in 2003 with his album Rawls Sings Sinatra. His first R&B song, Love Is a Hurtin' Thing, appeared in 1966 on his album Soulin'. A year later, he received his first Grammy for his single Dead End Street. He would eventually win three Grammys in his musical career. In 1976, he made his international breakthrough with the album All Things in Time, which included the song You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine. In 1977, he had several more hits, including See You When I Git There and Lady Love. In 1989, he had a hit with Dianne Reeves with Fine Brown Frame. In addition to singing, he also appeared as an actor in a number of feature films, such as Leaving Las Vegas, Blues Brothers 2000 and Baywatch Nights. Rawls had been working on his own foundation for children in third world countries and war zones since he was 18. He was committed to charities, such as the United Negro College Fund, which had provided scholarships to black high school students since 1944. From 1980 onwards he organised a fundraising show, for which he managed to enlist many, mainly black, artists. After his death this project continued as the Lou Rawls Parade. In December 2005 it was announced that Rawls had lung cancer and a brain tumor. He died on 6 January 2006 in a hospital in Los Angeles and was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. He left his entire estate to charities. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
