With the approaching visit of Pope Francis to New York City, the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives remembers the October 1979 visit from Pope John Paul II. Although the presidency of John F. Kennedy, America’s first Catholic president, was nearly two decades in the past, the separation of church and state and concerns about papal influence over the White House remained salient in 1979. Even as the newscaster in this video suggests that concern over these issues were in the past, the fact that they are the sole content of his report suggests otherwise. Today they would no longer merit mention. In 1979 Pope John Paul II sought to avoid any involvement in American politics and neither political party sought the pope’s support. This week, as Pope Francis speaks before Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike hope that the pontiff supports their positions on topics ranging from the environment to Planned Parenthood.
