Australian scientists have discovered a new species of native bee — and it’s already creating a buzz for its tiny devil-like horns and striking name: the Lucifer Bee. Found in Western Australia’s remote Bremer Ranges, this newly identified insect — officially named Megachile lucifer — is the first new member of its group in 20 years. Researchers say its “highly distinctive horns” appear only on the females and might be used for defense, collecting pollen, or nest-building. Lead scientist Dr. Kit Prendergast from Curtin University says the name “Lucifer” came to her while watching the Netflix show of the same name — but it also means “light-bringer” in Latin, symbolizing the need to shine light on bee conservation and the urgent need to protect endangered species and their ecosystems. The discovery, published in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, highlights the growing importance of protecting native pollinators in regions threatened by mining and climate change. Without these bees, scientists warn, many rare wildflowers — and even entire ecosystems — could disappear before we fully understand them. #ScienceNews #LuciferBee #Australia #WildlifeDiscovery #Bees #Conservation #NatureNews #Biodiversity
