Rainbow Soap Making using Natural Colorants

This video shows how I make a layered rainbow soap using natural colorants including clays, alkanet root, & indigo root. It's also scented with my favorite essential oil blend (see below for recipe). I divided the recipe before mixing and made each layer separately. Thanks so much for watching & subscribing! :) Before combining the oils and lye, I divided them into 5 equal parts. I then made and poured each layer separately. I allowed each layer to set up a few minutes before starting the next layer (when the top looked dull and didn’t move or jiggle). Every little bit helps, though, so thank you very much if you do! :) *** Video Timeline *** 00:24 - preparing the colors 01:00 - dividing the oils into equal parts 01:15 - making & pouring the first layer - purple 01:50 - second layer - blue 02:17 - third layer - green 02:42 - fourth layer - yellow 03:10 - fifth layer - pink 03:50 - unmolding & cutting 04:53 - final photos *** RECIPE *** Olive Oil - 33% Coconut Oil - 25% Shea Butter - 20% Cocoa Butter - 8% Avocado Oil - 7% Castor Oil - 7% Superfat – 5% Essential Oil Blend: Lavender - 40% Lemon - 30% Bergamot - 20% Patchouli - 10% Lye - to calculate your lye amount, enter your recipe into a soap calculator like the one at Majestic Mountain Sage: http://goo.gl/7hH5Vw Water - I used a 33% lye solution (water = 2 x lye) COLORS: PURPLE Alkanet Root Powder - 2 teaspoons dispersed in 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil I used 2 teaspoons of the alkanet oil per cup of soap (I allowed the alkanet powder to sink to the bottom of the little dish overnight, then I tried to use only the colored oil on top. I still ended up with a few specks of alkanet) BLUE Indigo Root Powder - 0.25 teaspoon dissolved in 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil - sit overnight (Amy Warden’s method - http://goo.gl/EaD5qi) I used 1/2 teaspoon of the indigo oil per cup of soap GREEN French Green Clay - 4 teaspoons dispersed in distilled water (enough to make it fluid) I used 2 teaspoons of the fluid green clay per cup of soap This green clay has a tendency to look like a yellowish pea green. Gel phase does help a bit. You can counter the yellow and get a nicer green by adding a few drops of the indigo oil.
