Via Vitae (8:40) Charles Hubert Parry is with Charles Villiers Stanford one of the two main pillars of the English Musical Renaissance. Parry was one of the most important trendsetters in British music after Mendelssohn’s lasting influence in the mid-19th Century, basing his symphonic models upon the legacy of Beethoven and Brahms, and in opposition to Stanford who chose Schumann and Mendelssohn. Parry, as an aging man, was terribly affected by WWI; he had a commission to fill in November 1914 and that is how he composed From Death to Life, a symphonic poem which celebrated homecoming soldiers from the front and extolled the spiritual triumph of life over death. The actual circumstances of its premieres, i.e. a war that was supposed to be over before Christmas 1914, made the work not so popular, and it has been seldom played since its creation, much in spite it being one of Parry’s most technical and philosophical mature works. Parry fue uno de los dictadores de tendencias musicales en Gran Bretaña después de la fuerte influencia que tuvo Mendelssohn a mediados del siglo 19, basando sus modelos sinfónicos sobre los legados de Beethoven y Brahms, opuestamente a Stanford quien eligió a Schumann y Mendelssohn. La 1GM supuso un duro golpe para Parry, quien ya era un hombre anciano; al tener una comisión para Noviembre de 1914 fue como compuso De la Muerte a la Vida, un poema sinfónico que celebraba a los soldados que volvían del frente y el triunfo espiritual de la vida sobre la muerte. Las circunstancias de los estrenos, en otras palabras una guerra que debía haber terminado antes de la Navidad de 1914, provocó que la obra no llegara a ser tan popular y desde entonces ha sido ejecutada pocas veces, muy a pesar que se trate de una de las obras más maduras de Parry tanto en aspectos técnicos como filosóficos.
