They're pot concierges. And if you want to know about the high life, these experienced smokers will show you the greener side of Denver while keeping you safe and comfortable. In fact, comfort is one of the top priorities at Colorado Rocky Mountain High tours. The company is just one of several pot-focused tour operators that embraced Colorado's decision to become the first state to legalize recreational marijuana sales and consumption for residents and non-residents on January 1st. Owner Addison Morris explains that her clients, who tend to be older, want a sophisticated smoking experience that will give them the same feeling they had the first time they got high. And since it's illegal to smoke pot in public, Morrison created a special kind of experience where people can enjoy their smoke. "I put a group of eight adults into a limo. Each one of them has a designer bag filled with gourmet munchies and they also have a little stash bag with smoking paraphernalia because they're not traveling with this. And then it is stocked with natural colas and water and such. Within 15 minutes they make their first buy because what they're here for is to get high. And then they start smoking." Since the law came into effect, Morris says she has received hundreds of calls and emails. One of the reasons she thinks clients choose her tours is that she specializes in privacy and has concierges that cater to a clients' desires. She describes her guests as well-to-do out of towners that are looking for discretion and a bit of hand-holding while they tour retail outlets that grow and sell marijuana and edible marijuana foods. "It's hard to explain to them that this is one-hit stuff ... that's also the other role of the concierge is to make sure they do not consume too much because after that first hit, this group of responsible, mature, professionals who more than likely have children and grandchildren or grandchildren in college, they turn into a bunch of giggling college freshmen and it just goes downhill from there." A typical cannabis tour costs $325 (USD) per person and includes a visit to four shops that sell recreational marijuana and a look at one of the grow facilities. Morris explains that she and the team of concierges customize tours too and take care of everything from watching a guest's spending in a boutique to ordering a meal in advance at one of the area's restaurants. Concierge Dawn Blackman gave Reuters Television a glimpse of one of the tours. "We're on our way to Ganja Gourmet, which sells edibles. They started out as a restaurant but that did not last the way our laws went. And they recently decided to add a recreational side and a medical side so they have all kinds of ... they have medicated hot sauce," she said. Once inside the shop guests are able to purchase a range of items from marijuana buds with names like Green Crack to pot brownies, gummy candies and even cannabis canola cooking oil. Blackman said guests are usually taken by the edibles and like to do a little munching as they make their way through the rest of the tour. While recreational pot tours are a new kind of tourism in the state, Morris is convinced pot tourism is here to stay. Since January 1st, she has received so many inquiries that she says she is booked through June. And she's not the only one saying that weed tours are smoking hot. Matt Brown, co-founder of My 420 Tours, describes the response to his tours in the last month as "overwhelming". My 420 Tours specializes in three-day trips that cost between $1,200-1,500 (USD). Brown says guests are picked up and dropped off at the airport and he creates an experience for them that feels as though they are visiting their best friend that lives in Colorado. He arranges accommodation and activities, including ones where guests learn to cook with marijuana. "They're coming to experience life living in the future. They tend to be my parents age, my age or older. And for somebody like that to come in who's only memory is that weed brownie somebody's friend made in college that got them really super high -- this is a whole new world," Brown explains. The class takes place in a trendy Denver neighborhood and is taught by Blaine Hine, a personal chef who completed his training at Johnson and Wales University. On the menu are lamb meatballs with a balsamic/cannabis reduction, chocolate truffles infused with cannabis and granola made with cannabis honey. While cooking the meatballs, Hine explains to the class that the cannabis, which is in the sauce, needs a thicker substance to stick to, such as butter.
