his world geography lesson focuses on East Asia and the physical characteristics that defines the region. Featured is a description of the Tian Shan, Kunlun Shan, Qingling Shan Mountains in China, along with the Himalayas. The Taebaek Mountains of Korea and the Japanese Alps are also examined. When looking at the Japanese Alps, the creation of these mountains through convergent subduction is discusses as is the over 100 active volcanoes of the country, including Mt. Fuji. Two deserts of the region are discussed, the Gobi and Taklamakan desert along with the Tibetan Plateau. The Yellow River's role in being the cultural hearth (along with the Yangtze River) of China as well as it's difficulties with flooding which has given the river the nickname of "China's Sorrow." The Yangtze River and the 3 Gorges Dam are discussed as well as the importance of the Xi River. Last, the climate of the region is explored, pointing out the effect that continentality and the rain shadow effect has on the arid and semi-arid climates in the west, and how climate divides the eastern part of the region between Humid Sub-Tropical and Humid-Continental. This lesson is designed to address Texas World Geography Texas Knowledge Standards (TEKS), but is applicable to any regional geography course, or just someone wanting to know more about the world around us.
