Something Finally Went Wrong For Us In Guatemala

This trip was off to a great start, but we seemed to run out of luck partway through. We started off by finally saying goodbye to Lake Atitlan after 3 glorious weeks in this magical part of Guatemala. Our drive for the first day is a short one, just a couple of hours to a town called Chichicastenango. Chichicastenango is most well known for having a famous Maya market that is one of the largest markets in all of Central America. It has been running for centuries and continues to be a hub of activity twice a week for locals and visitors alike. If we were heading back to Canada after our travels in Guatemala, we would have stocked up on all the best souvenirs, but instead we bought a few necessities and enjoyed the market vibes. Chichicastenango is also well known for have a beautiful cemetery. We were visiting just before the Day of the Dead, so people were in the cemetery repainting their loved ones headstones and bringing the cemetery back to being gloriously colourful. This is the kind of place we probably should have gotten a guide, but it just didn't fit into our travel itinerary this time around. Just an hour away from Chichicastenango we arrived at our airbnb for the night. It was a quick stay, as our ultimate goal over the next few days is to arrive to TIkal which is still a few hundred kilometers away. Our plan for the second day of this drive was just to make the 160 kilometer drive to Coban, which would be our stopping point before exploring another beautiful part of Guatemala (Semuc Champey will be in the next video!). Although the drive wasn't far, things did not go to plan. You've probably seen lots of our drone shots where we show the car driving through Guatemala, and we absolutely love getting these shots. But, they come at a bit of a cost, which is that it isn't always the safest activity. We do our best to fly only in situations where we feel as safe as possible, but this time we pushed the drone a little too hard and crashed it for the very first time. It was a stressful situation as we were driving on windy roads with some big vehicles when it crashed. Trying to find a tiny drone amidst the jungles of Guatemala on the side of a 2-lane highway is not our idea of a fun time. However, our drone is like Evie's little brother. This guy has had our back for three years, so you can imagine how determined we were to find him!
