Shanghai's Fudan team creates world's first 2D silicon-free chip with 5,900 transistors

Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University has developed world's largest integrated silicon-free two-dimensional semiconductor microprocessor. The microprocessor, named Wuji (infinity), proves that 2D materials can be used to build real, working chips, a first in the world. The study was published April 2 in Nature, one of the world’s top science journals. Unlike traditional silicon, which is thick and easy to shape but is now close to its physical limits, 2D semiconductors are only a few atoms thick and great at moving electricity. But their tiny, fragile nature makes building large complex chips challenging, with most currently limited to a few hundred transistors. Built on the open-source RISC-V architecture, the chip includes over 5,900 transistors, far exceeding previous world record of 115, and can handle complex tasks like billions of calculations and instructions. The team used this technology to develop the world’s first 32-bit microprocessor based on 2D semiconductors, capable of performing up to 4.2 billion calculations and supporting programs with up to 1 billion RISC instructions. The Fudan team has spent more than a decade researching 2D semiconductor integrated circuits, and the inverter yield, the percentage of produced chips that function correctly, reached 99.77 percent. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
