Revitalizing Faith and Reason in America's Catholic Schools Saint Charles Forum Hosted By: John Haas, PH.D. Professor of Moral Theology St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Producers John Haas & Michael Warshaw In this expansive and urgent episode of the St. Charles Forum, Dr. John Haas is joined by four seasoned leaders in Catholic education: Monsignor Philip Kribben, Secretary for Education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia; Sister Margaret Gradel, IHM, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education; Father Philip Eichner, SM, President of Kellenberg Memorial High School in New York; and Barbara Falk, Headmistress of Oakcrest School in Washington, D.C. Together, they offer a penetrating look at the history, crisis, and promise of Catholic education in America. The discussion begins with the extraordinary growth and subsequent decline of Catholic schools: from 5.6 million students in 1964 to 2.5 million in 1989—a loss of over 3,000 schools. And yet, Catholic schools continue to far outperform their public counterparts in graduation rates, college placement, and academic achievement. Why, then, the decline? The panel addresses root causes: rising costs, the collapse in religious vocations, demographic shifts, and a weakened Catholic identity in some institutions. They explore responses both institutional and grassroots—from diocesan schools and religious orders to independent lay-led initiatives inspired by the teachings of Opus Dei and the Second Vatican Council. Through deeply personal and theological reflections, the guests reaffirm the mission of Catholic education: not merely academic excellence, but formation of the whole person in Christ. From teaching children how to pray the Angelus to building habits of virtue, to preparing them to live as free, moral, and loving witnesses to the truth, Catholic schools offer what no public system can: an education that touches the soul. In an age of cultural confusion, this episode boldly declares that the renewal of society begins in the classroom—when Christ is placed at the center.
