WA commerce secretary reviewing digital navigator program grants, citing audit concerns

Washington Commerce Secretary Joe Nguyen said he is reviewing how the state is handing out grants and if millions were mishandled after an audit highlighted by KOMO News. Nguyen, who has been in the office for just over three months, said he is well aware of the investigation by the State Auditor’s Office into the digital navigators program that was created by the legislature in 2019. The legislation allocated $50 million at the time, spread out over several cycles, to promote broadband access in underserved communities. But the audit suggested that 12 of the recipients did not meet multiple requirements and couldn’t prove whether employees worked in the state or what services they provided.
