Nature park, located on the south western part of Herzegovina, near the Croatian border, in area of 8.000 hectares. In the richest reserves of wading birds in Europe, its winter shelter is more than 200 species of birds. Their refuge in the park found another special type of animal, wild horses. Herd of wild horses is based during the war. In fact, abandoned by its owners, the local horses withdrew to the mountains and this despite the devastation of war and other dangers, they survived. The past 15 years, from the main herd in which there were twenty horses, mainly due the natural instincts, made the three herds, a total of about 70 horses. These beautiful animals during the summer, down to the lake water before the winter retreat in the mountains. Although they survived for many years, now threatens to exterminate them. In addition to natural enemies such as wolves, prowl the biggest predator of them all- man. People kill them from use, for meat and food. Horse meat particularly sought in the Croatian part of Adriatic sea, which borders of nature park. In addition, local people caught a small horses and trying to tame them, but young horses remain underdeveloped and lose their beauty. But the peasants to make faster and cheaper way to supply horses and pray mare while carrying young. Continue to systematically destroy them, wild horses will completely disappear. Although earlier this year passed a low on protection of animal its implementation doesnt work. Particular problem is and what the horses are in the natural park, but are not owned by the government, and they can not protect them. It is ironic that the only protection of horses from a man, something that a man planted mines. Minefields have become the sole patrons of the devastating nature of human destruction.
