The teacher, musician and composer Stella Paulina Sprockel was born in Curaçao on 21 July 1938. She was gifted with musical genes. Her father played clarinet in the Curaçao Philharmonic Orchestra, while her mother is a descendant of the musical Palm dynasty on Curaçao with composers such as her great-grandfather Jan Gerard Palm (1831-1906) and her uncle Jacobo Palm (1887-1982). As a child, she was exposed to various Curaçaoan music and dance styles, ranging from the waltz, mazurka, danza, march, polka, bolero, and the tumba. These dance rhythms later became the foundation for Stella's compositions. This gave rise to a rich musical repertoire of new liturgical songs composed on texts, translated from Latin into the Papiamentu language that is spoken on the Caribbean islands Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire. "Den Kuaresma" (In Lent) is performed by Fayalobi, a choir consisting of respectively Suzy Wong, Nathalie Frans, Nelly Tromp, Mireille Wong, Roy Maduro, Milan Getrouw and Stella Sprockel. Fayalobi refers to the flower "Ixora coccinea," which the female members of the choir wore in their hair during performances.
