Fight Club: Carl Jung’s warning to the world

Fight Club came out in 1999 but its warnings about the modern world have remained remarkably relevant. It's a modern myth that holds many important lessons on Carl Jung’s Shadow Self, and the dangers of repressing our dark side. According to the Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung, the shadow represents the unconscious parts of our personality that we don't acknowledge or accept, and includes negative traits such as anger, jealousy, and aggression. But it also contains enormous positive potential and many remarkable gifts that we’ve left behind in our childhood. In Fight Club, the unnamed narrator is depicted as a passive character drifting aimlessly through life. The creation of the Tyler Durden character is an excellent illustration of Jung’s Shadow archetype, and how repressed desires and impulses can manifest in alarming ways. It also suggests how confronting and integrating these lost parts of ourselves is necessary for wholeness (what Jung called “individuation”). The film also gives examples of a psychological process known as “shadow projection,” which happens when people attribute to others the very things they most want to deny in themselves. It occurs in individual people but can also occur in groups.
