Mazar-e-Sharif Military Display, Taliban's Interpretation of Islam Causes Controversy

(2 May 1997) 49533 AFGHANISTAN - Mazar-e-Sharif Military Display APTV Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan - April 28, 1997 One of the Afghan factions battling with the Taliban religious army has put on a massive show of military force in its northern stronghold. In scenes eerily reminiscent of old Soviet-style May Day parades -- although on a much smaller scale -- tanks, Scud missiles and well-drilled troops were paraded through Mazar-e-Sharif, stronghold of northern warlord Rashid Dostum. The Taliban, who now control about two-thirds of Afghanistan, are expected to launch a spring offensive soon against Dostum and his ally, Ahmed Shah Massood. The Taliban commander of the Ghorband valley had vowed to destroy two fourth century Buddhist statues, should the Taliban capture the city. After an outcry from several Buddhist countries the Taliban leadership backed down from the decision. But at the front-line the men in charge have their own ideas. The city of Bamyan lies in the mountainous region of Afghanistan, at the heart of the Silk road. These statues of Buddha - at 35 metres (115 feet) - are the tallest of their kind in the world and the oldest surviving. But now their survival is at risk. If they don't pray to it then it is historical monument so what do we do to it?"
