After seven years of working tirelessly with his family during Tet (Vietnamese New Year) to conserve otters in the mangrove forest, Merman Tiun has finally given it all up this year, 2026, to spend time with his parents and siblings. His father's eyesight has deteriorated, and his mother suffers from diabetes. However, despite his efforts to conserve otters since 2012, the situation remains unmanipulated. All of Merman Tiun's efforts so far have only highlighted the importance of otters to our environment. Whether or not he can protect them ultimately depends on fate! Today, while traveling in Da Nang, I heard the news that a baby male otter had been kidnapped, a baby female otter was suffering from enteritis, and a pet male otter had been sent to a sanctuary to acclimate to the wild. As a result, I, the merman Tiun, cut my Tet holiday short and rushed back to the otter sanctuary to care for them. Upon arriving in Long Thanh, the first thing that happened was that some of the otters led me into the mangrove forest to inform me about the kidnapped baby male otter. However, I had to put that concern aside and travel over 100 km with my parents to Long Hai Market early in the morning to buy mullet for the otters. After putting the mackerel in the refrigerator, the otters returned home just in time to beg for food, bringing with them the female otter, who was unable to eat due to her illness. I then had to rush another 7 km to the veterinary clinic to get medicine for the sick otter. Next, I had to make a 46 km trip back to Saigon to be on time for my swimming lessons with the students. Unfortunately, because no one supports otter conservation, I have to travel over 100 km every day just to earn money for their preservation. Merman Tiun's new student this time is from Can Tho and can only attend the mermaid diving course for 2 days and 3 sessions. Her swimming skills are still weak, and she cannot complete the 25m breaststroke, so she will learn basic swimming techniques to combine with mermaid diving, as well as safety skills when swimming with a mermaid tail and a safety buddy. A mermaid diving course with Merman Tiun costs $120, equivalent to 100kg of mullet for the otters.
