January 23, 2025 - 3:00 PM 41°F / 5°C Walking (without narration) westbound through the Sint-Annatunnel, a pedestrian and bicycle only underground tunnel underneath the Scheldt River in Antwerp, Belgium, from the Sint-Jansvliet square to Simons Park. Highlights: 00:00 - Sint-Jansvliet 00:57 - Walking westbound on Sint-Annatunnel 08:05 - Simons Park From Wikipedia: "The Sint-Annatunnel is a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the Scheldt in the city of Antwerp . Construction of the Sint-Annatunnel began under the leadership of IMALSO in 1931 and the tunnel was opened in 1933 . This 572 metre long tunnel, which is 31.57 metres underground, is also called the Pedestrian Tunnel by the people of Antwerp and has connected the city with the Left Bank since 1933 , in other words the older with the newer Antwerp. Both sides have a lift for forty people or a maximum of 3000 kg, and two times two authentic wooden escalators . These escalators were a real novelty for that time. The external diameter of the tunnel is 4.74 m, the internal 4.30 m. The two entrance buildings were designed by Emiel Van Averbeke . Because there are occasional defects or interruptions at these escalators, or further away at the Kennedy bicycle tunnel or the Sint-Anna ferry , the road manager, the Roads and Traffic Agency , has a website and since 2020 a smartphone app , where one can consult the current and planned accessibility of these three bicycle and pedestrian connections. There are no separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists must bike through the tunnel at walking pace (maximum 5 km per hour), but often bike faster. Moped drivers (without a running engine) are only allowed to go through the tunnel on foot."
