His name was Witold Pilecki. In 1940, this Polish resistance officer volunteered to be imprisoned in Auschwitz. His mission: build an underground network, gather intelligence, and alert the Allies to Nazi atrocities.   For over two years, Pilecki endured starvation, torture, and executions — yet managed to organize resistance inside the camp and smuggle out detailed reports of what was happening there.
