His name was Witold Pilecki. In 1940, this Polish resistance officer volunteered to be imprisoned in Auschwitz. His mission: build an underground network, gather intelligence, and alert the Allies to Nazi atrocities. For over two years, Pilecki endured starvation, torture, and executions — yet managed to organize resistance inside the camp and smuggle out detailed reports of what was happening there. His Witold’s Report became one of the earliest eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust. He escaped in 1943… only to be executed by Poland’s postwar communist regime for “treason.” In our linked Short, we explore what happened after the war to those who resisted — did WWII’s generals and heroes simply retire, or face new battles in a divided Europe?
