Nineteen years on, no game has built a world quite like Rapture. BioShock dropped on Xbox 360 and PC in 2007 and changed what people thought a video game could feel like. But why does it still hit so differently? In this video essay I look at BioShock through a photographer’s lens — not just what Rapture looks like, but why it makes you feel like an intruder in someone else’s tragedy from the very first second. This is the kind of game that stays with you.
