He was reanimated, or he had received a pulmonary resuscitation which was successful and he was then flown into the hospital where he was admitted at the emergency room and stabilised in terms of his cardio-pulmonary situation. His heartbeat is back to normal and his pulmonary function needs to be supported. The president is on artificial respiration at this point in time and remains in the intensive care unit for the next hours and probably days." 4. We cannot forecast if the crucial organ systems in the body were damaged by his cardiac arrest. Klestil talking to media STORYLINE: Austrian President Thomas Klestil was in a critical condition on Monday after being rushed to a hospital following heart failure. Security guards at Klestil's suburban Vienna home used a defibrillator early on Monday to revive the 71-year-old president, whose term ends this week, and he was flown by helicopter to Vienna's General Hospital. A doctor treating Klestil told reporters that Klestil remained in critical condition after being moved from the emergency room to an intensive care unit. Dr.Christian G.Herald said "The president is on artificial respiration at this point in time and remains in the intensive care unit for the next hours and probably days." Klestil's second and final six-year term ends on Thursday, when Heinz Fischer takes over as president. Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel was temporarily taking over presidential duties because of Klestil's illness. Klestil suffered from a severe case of pneumonia in 1996, and his lung problems turned serious again in recent days. Klestil, a career diplomat who earlier served as Austria's ambassador to the United States and to the United Nations, was widely credited with helping restore Austria's credibility following a controversy over the Nazi German wartime service of his predecessor, Kurt Waldheim. A packed schedule for Klestil's last days in office was cancelled. In late June, he cancelled a public Open House at the Hofburg, the central imperial palace where the presidency is based, because of complications following surgery on both of his Achilles tendons. While the post is mostly ceremonial, the Austrian president is commander in chief of the country's military, and the constitution gives the president the power to reject nominations for Cabinet ministers or even to remove them from office - something that has rarely been done.
