Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2017 Verified Purchase I think it is fair to say that there are few collections of a conductor's work - and I own many such collections - quite so enjoyable as this Jochum box-set. His Bruckner recordings - legendary - are second-to-none, and deserve nothing but praise. The magnificent Brahms recordings defy their years and monophonic sound as Jochum delivers vitality and energy in abundance. The Haydn and Mozart symphonies - clear-sighted and spontaneous sounding - are joyous and uplifting. The Beethoven recordings are honest and self-effacing, and not the overblown show-pieces of some egotistical baton waver! There is a recording of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde which is the equal of those recorded by Reiner and Walter, in my opinion. And Elgar's "Enigma Variations" receives a thoroughly idiomatic interpretation; wistful, contemplative, dynamic! - "Nimrod" is achingly beautiful. Schubert symphonies minus the grandiosity and superficiality one hears in many recordings - Jochum views Schubert's symphonies as proto-Bruckner... spiritual depth, tormented psychology - tief ernst - and, yes, quietude. Jochum makes music... and music is what drives Jochum to excel. There is much to enjoy in this marvelous little box... nothing but unalloyed pleasure. Need I say more? The Mozart is brisk, yet stately and powerfully propelled in the outer movements. The mystery of the slow movement is wonderfully projected, with a lovely sheen on the muted strings. The performance might be compared to his Orfeo version with the Bamberger Symphoniker: The latter is more heavyweight, more "traditional" despite being almost equally briskly paced. Most importantly the ineffable element of charm is lacking, which might well be the result of an especially happy collaboration with the Boston orchestra. This applies even more to the Unfinished Symphony. Fast tempi are no longer the exception, as they used to be; but Jochum somehow contrives to render them utterly convincing. This performance does not move, it dances, and yet without in the least effacing the sense of menace in the latter half of the head movement. The Andante is pure magic. It spins a the web of romantic mystery from the first bar, and when the final notes vanish into the mist, you are left with a feeling of grace - so rarely accomplished in this enchanting work. This is far superior to his earlier recording on Philips (Bavarian Radio Orch), which is more "standard" again and also more of a heavyweight. By itself the latter sounds convincing enough; but when you come to it after auditioning the present album, it seems quite humourless. This coupling is the same as published by Ormandy on RCA.
