Renaissance Discoveries: The Altarpiece

Filippo Brunelleschi changed architecture with his new, antique-flavoured style. He changed painting with his invention of linear perspective. Then, beginning in 1434, he changed the style of the altarpiece, transforming the ornate decorative ensemble of the Middle Ages into a single dramatic scene, unified in space and time. In this video we look at how Brunelleschi’s 1434 decree for the decoration of the Florentine church of San Lorenzo led to a change in how artists approached the altarpiece—allowing us to track the gradual but steady progression from the Gothic art of the Middle Ages to what we call the Renaissance style of art.
