I am Dr. Deepak Goyal, and I am a Pediatric Gastroenterologist in Delhi, NCR. Today we want to discuss an important topic: diarrhea in kids. Diarrhea is a very common problem in children, and we face it daily in our #opd . In this video, we will discuss all the information related to diarrhea. What are the reasons for diarrhea? We will discuss its #etiology. What are the #symptoms or consequences that we worry about, & what should we take care of? How to manage diarrhea, effective #treatment , and how to #prevents diarrhea so that further such episodes do not happen. We will discuss all these things little by little. If we talk about the etiology, what are the #reasons for diarrhea? So most of the diarrhea is #infectious in origin. Through contaminated food or water, infectious organisms enter our bodies and #causes diarrhea. The most common infectious organisms are viruses. Around 90% of diarrhea in children is caused by viruses. There are many types of viruses, like the Rotavirus and Norwalk virus. There are many such technical viruses that #causes diarrhea. There are some common bacteria that are responsible for diarrhea, like E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella, which are largely associated with #bacterial diarrhea in children. Apart from this, there are certain protozoa, like amoebiasis, giardiasis, and some parasitic infections, that can cause diarrhea in children. Most of the cases we discussed were infections in origin; rarely, diarrhea can occur as a consequence of some medicine or a side effect of some drug. Or if you have a systemic disease or some other problem due to which there can sometimes be a diarrhea-like presentation in children. Now we are discussing a little about the symptoms or consequences of diarrhea & what we should take care of. The main symptom of diarrhea is that the child will have more quantity of stool, and the consistency will be loose or watery. Normal #children #stool once, twice, or three times and have a semi-solid to solid consistency of stool. But if a child has diarrhea, will he go to the stool more than two or three times, having its consistency liquid or watery? Sometimes the children go a little more frequently, like going three or four times, but their consistency is fine, i.e., semi-solid, then we will not label it as diarrhea. So, while labeling the diarrhea, we have to keep in mind, what is the form or consistency of our stool? Whenever we keep it in the category of diarrhea, it means a #child is passing loose and very watery stools twice or three times. So, consistency is always more important than frequency as a matter of bowel habits.
