It first entered Steam early access on October 7, 2025. The game is a homage to strategy games of the 90s, particularly the original Command & Conquer, from which it takes parts of its design and gameplay such as map visuals and cutscenes. Dying Breed is set in an alternative reality in which World War II ended with the nuclear bombardment of the northern hemisphere. Humanity now lives in the south, where two factions, the West World Alliance and the Empire Ascending Order, fight for dominance. Key to victory is a mysterious crystalline substance know as Substance D. The game is a traditional base-building real-time strategy title, and lifts its gameplay almost wholesale from classic Westwood strategy games. Also included are live-action full motion cutscenes.
