In March 2011, a metal detectorist searching for artefacts on the Glynde Estate outside Lewes in the UK discovered a spectacular Middle Bronze Age hoard. Dating to between c.1400 and 1250 BC the hoard contained artefacts of copper alloy, gold and amber in the remains of a ceramic vessel. These include three palstaves; five ‘Sussex Loop’ bracelets; eight coiled finger-rings; four conical ‘tutuli’ mounts; a lozenge-headed pin; four twisted torcs; fragments of coiled spiral ring necklaces and quoit-headed pins. The hoard was acquired by the Sussex Archaeological Society in 2014 with the intention of putting the artefacts on public display. The Society used a variety of techniques for presentation including digital visualisations. To achieve this, the Cultural Informatics Research Group at the University of Brighton digitally scanned selected artefacts from the hoard to create 3D virtual models and 3D prints for public display. Using the Near Lewes Hoard as a case study, this presentation will consider the pipeline of scanning from artefact to choice of capture technology and presentation techniques. It will consider the lessons learned from this scanning and visualisation project, including the benefits and limitations of visualisations and their wider relevance to the presentation of archaeological collections.
