A bone infection can occur either by hematogenous spread from an infected joint, or it may be a result of trauma, surgery, or instrumentation (prosthetics). Let us quickly review some of the common bone and joint infections, so keep watching! ▬ 📌 Bone Infection - What happens? The formation of pus precipitates ischemia and necrosis; the central area of the dead bone is known as the sequestrum. We may also observe new bone (the involucrum) being formed around the injection site. In children, the metaphysis of the long bones (femur, tibia, and humerus) is most often involved and infection of the spine is common in adults. ▬ 📌 Microorganisms causing bone infections 🟠Staphylococcus aureus accounts for 90% of infections; 🟠Rarer causes include Streptococcus pyogenes (4%), 🟠Haemophilus influenza (4%), 🟠Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Brucella (2%) ▬ 📌 Bone and Joint Infections All the bone and joint infections discussed are listed below. We will look at their clinical features, symptoms, diagnosis, and possible treatment options available. 🔵 Osteomyelitis – It is an infection of the bone. Symptoms may include pain in a specific bone with overlying redness, fever, and weakness. 🔵 Chronic Arthritis - On-going pain, swelling, deformity, and/or a chronically discharging sinus may be found. Culture-based diagnosis is essential. 🔵 Suppurative Arthritis - Follows bacteremia or infection of the joint. Large joints (e.g., the knee) are most affected. 🔵 Viral Arthritis - Some viruses are associated with arthritis, for example, parvovirus, rubella, mumps, and hepatitis B. 🔵 Prosthetic joint infections - Prosthetic joints may become infected at the time of operation (early presentation) or because of hematogenous spread (later presentation).
