How Many Long Nights Have There Been (ASOIAF History Mystery)

The ancient histories of Westeros are a bit messy and this is done on purpose by George RR Martin. Our characters know some things are at least off and when you look at the histories of battles against the others or the white walkers you can see hints that maybe there was more than one long night. What do you all think about this? Is GRRM hinting to us through the fog of history that this is something that has happened more than once? Perhaps something that happens for different reasons in different parts of the planet? Is it part of the cycle of history? Is human nature and the way power is taken by magical means lead to long nights across the world? Would the idea of multiple long nights or long night type events under different circumstances help make some sense of the legends we have from across the world of Westeros and Essos? Things like the five forts and places that seem to be dealing with a similar problem but clearly not the same problem. Let me know what you all think of this theory.
