Date filmed: Tuesday the 5th of December 2023 Video filmed between 11:01 and 12:11 Route(s): North Downs Line | London Waterloo to Reading Line Wokingham Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing (MCB) Location: B3349 Barkham Road, Wokingham - This crossing has now been fully renewed. The sights that are in this video are sadly no more. - Here's a compilation of videos filmed over the course of around an hour and ten minutes getting some all-important last pre-renewal footage of this retro and rare level crossing beside Wokingham's Railway Station. Come the end of January (a month and a bit from this video being published), this level crossing is planned to be fully-renewed during the final stage of the Feltham Area re-signalling project, which has gradually been completed since 2019 and completely took out the entire Feltham Area Signalling Centre earlier in 2023. Sadly, the signal box here (where the crossing, area's signalling, and Star Lane CCTV Crossing are controlled from) is also due to be taken out with signalling control moving to Basingstoke's Wessex Rail Operation Centre. In its current guise (bar the LED wigwags and three newer barrier arms of course), it is believed to date back as far as 1976! Four Godwin Warren Engineering (GWE) barriers still remain operational here, as well as even one with an original metal skirt, and the entry (left-hand) side barrier pedestals on each side contain mechanical bells which chime slowly but clearly as the barriers lower, a refreshing sound to hear given that nearly all level crossings have electronic alarms now. The likely reason for them chiming so slowly now is age, as they used to chime a bit quicker. The lack of any 'auto-raise' function, to raise the barriers near enough as soon as a train has passed, also shows its age, as the barriers won't raise until a button on the controls is pressed by the signaller. Due there being signalled road junctions either side of the crossing, the level crossing's control has an integration with the traffic lights here, and all which read over the crossing need to be requested to be set to red before the barriers can be lowered. Seven lowerings are featured throughout this video, the last un-cut, featuring both Great Western Railway 'Thames Turbo' Diesel Multiple Units and South Western Railway Electric Multiple Units. The first lowering also features a 'Multi Purpose Vehicle' which was just finishing a daily Rail Head Treatment Train working, one of the year's last, sent around to blast leaf fall from the line around the North Downs Line and various routes off of it. It arrived, turned around, and departed all in the same lowering, so you see it twice in very, very quick succession! Various horns can be heard throughout for trackside workers on-site at the time of my visit.
