This production of Racine's play, Bérénice, premièred in Paris in 1670, and performed in the original French at St John's College, Cambridge, in November 2023, was directed by Professor Patrick Boyde. The French text and English subtitles are included. The musical interludes (Chopin Nocturnes) are played by pianist John Bryden. This recording captures a single live performance of Racine’s most accessible tragedy. This is the latest in a series of poetic dramas which Professor Boyde has directed annually over the past twenty years, all in their original languages, all regarded as classics. Thirty-three dramas, listed below, have been made available as models to emulate, on a comprehensive website where you can find out more about our vision and techniques.
