We visited Toshiko Matsuba living in Yamaten, Totsukawa village, Nara, Japan. For the namesake of Yamaten, it's high up the mountain, houses and fields cling to the hillside. Granny Toshiko is full of liveliness, walks up steep hills effortlessly, grows various crops on the slope. Aside from rice, she grows millet and sorghum as well, which became rare today. Toshiko, who has lived through hard times in the past, tells her story and her lifestyle is inspiring. She says she's happy now, and we shared a moment of her life in the mountain. Masami TANETORI Sakaban, a seed collector in Mie, met her on her journey in search of cereal seeds.
