Three noteworthy events mark the dawn of American history: the settlement of Jamestown in Virginia, the arrival of the pilgrims in Massachusetts, and the founding of what is now New York City by Dutch colonists. In 1628 Domine Jonas Michaelius, an ordained minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, set sail from Holland and headed west. After twelve weeks at sea, he set foot in New Amsterdam--the most multinational port in the New World. Dutch, English, Germans, Danes, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Africans were among the people Michaelius encountered. Eighteen languages were spoken within the colony. Michaelius conducted a worship service in both Dutch and French in the loft of a gristmill on the first Sunday after his arrival. Today diversity and inclusion are again exciting elements in the four congregations of the Collegiate Church of New York City: Middle, Marble, West End, and Fort Washington Collegiate. Gathered from Many Nations tells the story of the early years of the Collegiate Church. Kim and Chris Moore, members of West End Collegiate, explore historic sites in lower Manhattan and Albany. They tour a replica of the Halve Maen, the ship Henry Hudson sailed to the New World in 1609, and visit New York City's Liberty Bell. The Moores also view the charter granted by King William II to the Collegiate Church, establishing it as the oldest corporation in North America. #HenryHudson, #CollegiateChurch, #DutchColony, #FortWashingtonCollegiate, #Manhattan, #ReformedChurch, #NewYorkCity, #MarbleCollegiate, #ReformedChurchinAmerica, #MiddleCollegiate, #WestEndCollegiate,
