Composed shortly after the infamous First World War battle by Pipe Major William Laurie (1881-1916) of the 8th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He served in France from 1915 to 1916 and was in the actual battle but became ill as a result of trench conditions. He was invalided back to England where he died on 28 November 1916 in the Third Southern General Hospital in Oxford possibly as a result of contracting pneumonia and pleurisy in the trenches and then meningitis after being admitted to hospital. He left behind his wife Una and three children, who were all aged under five when he died, but lived long enough to see it adopted by every pipe band in the Army.
