Your shield has a limited charge, and balancing its strength with your ammo is a must. Flip your shields off too quickly and a bullet you are pulling into your ship will actually destroy it! Other than normal bullets, weapons are fired in the same order they are collected, and any of your explosive weapons can backfire. This will probably ruin you more than missing your shield timing. A good number of my practice sessions ended by firing a weapon into my own mines while I was rapidly pressing the attack key, or aerodiving into enemy warheads. If I weren't trying to play so cautiously, I would have broken a million in score.
