This lecture traces the architectural shift from legacy distance-vector protocols to modern hybrid systems, focusing on how metric complexity and update mechanisms define network reliability and security. We begin with a post-mortem of RIP and IGRP, examining the vulnerabilities inherent in "routing by rumor" and the limitations of classful, broadcast-based updates. The core of the session explores the "Hybrid" revolution of EIGRP, analyzing how it combines the simplicity of distance-vector with link-state efficiency through the Diffusing Update Algorithm (DUAL). Students will evaluate critical security and performance enhancements, including: Metric Sophistication: The transition from simple hop counts to 32-bit composite metrics (Bandwidth, Delay, Reliability, and Load). Path Intelligence: Utilizing the Topology Table for 100% loop-free topologies and fast convergence through Feasible Successors. Operational Resilience: The strategic use of Variance for unequal-cost load balancing and the implementation of MD5/SHA-256 Authentication to prevent malicious route injection. Modern Compatibility: Support for CIDR and VLSM, essential for secure network segmentation in contemporary enterprise environments.
