Kidney Sisters: Women get transplant from same donor on same day

CINCINNATI, Ohio (WKRC) - Sarah Green-Moore and Renee Paige share the bond of sisters. They are friends who just met last month. Life-threatening illness brought them together. Sarah was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2012 and Renee battled Lupus which attacked her kidneys. Both women spent time on dialysis. In December, the women got the same call that the wait for a kidney was over. Sarah was shocked at how quickly she got a match. She said, “I was just put on the registry in September. I'm doing a transplant in December I was resigned to the fact that it might be three to five years.” Renee was on the registry for about six months. Last month, Sarah and Renee got their transplants. Coincidentally, they had just met each other in a waiting area at University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Workers at the hospital told them they would be receiving a kidney from the same donor. "We're connected and it feels good because like I said, I have siblings, but this is my sister that we are connected from the same person,” Renee said. Sarah added, “It’s like we've been knowing each other forever and I love it. I just love it and I love her.” Friendship sometimes happens when you least expect it and Sarah and Renee share an experience most never will. Tears flowed as Renee reflected on the experience. She said, “It changes your life. You have hope. You know that things that you couldn't do before you can do now. I'm not limited anymore to anything and that's nice to know.” The women want to thank the donor's family, but they won't get any information on the donor for six months. Medical workers told Sarah and Renee that the family needs time to grieve. Renee and Sarah also hope to raise awareness about organ donation.
