Public Lecture at SIMSR Auditorium, KJ Somaiya Vidyavihar at 1100am July 20, 2012. A collaborative programme of TIFR and KJ Somaiya College of Science and Commerce. This talk surveys our current picture of elementary particles and their interactions. The key difference between fermions and bosons, and the role of force carriers, are highlighted. It explains why the Higgs boson is required to provide a mass to certain force carriers as well as matter particles, and why its recent discovery at the Large Hadron Collider is a significant achievement. India's participation in the LHC is highlighted before moving on to discuss what new discoveries might still await us at the LHC, such as supersymmetry and/or dark matter particles. About the speaker: Sunil Mukhi is a professor of physics at TIFR whose research interests include particle physics, gravitation and string theory. He also has an active interest in science popularisation.
