#gymkhana #killarneyraceway #motorsport #witzenbergmotorklub Leon Engelbrecht driving a VW GOLF MKII GTI TURBO 16V. Witzenberg Motorklub was started under the wing of Somerset West Motor Club in 1983. Pierre van der Westhuizen became chairman after about six months and is currently the Honorary President. WBMK organised the Ceres round of the WP Rally Championship from 1986 when Toyota gave it's Quattro beating Conquest 4x4 Turbo it's debut. From 1990 the WBMK became independent as entity with the Ceres event now officially organised under the WBMK banner. Diffie Marais and Danie de Waal became the first team to win the WP Rally Championship for WBMK in 1997. Then Thorsten Pey and Mark Palmer followed suit in 2000 and more recently Ettiene du Toit and Patrick Vermaak in 2017. The WBMK members set about claiming the interclub Pop's Robert Championship and in fact after 12 consecutive years of winninng the series the other clubs simply gave up! In 1998 David Louw and Patrick Vermaak suffered a near fatal accident on the Total Autumn Trial Rally in the Overberg. Whilst recovering Patrick Vermaak, Neville Gleeson and Marius Bester initiated plans to run a gymkhana without the normal issues of handheld stopwatches and proper Judges of Fact. Neville Gleeson developed the now legendary Jayen Timer whilst André Mitchell wrote brilliant software in support. Xandré du Toit developed a superb Judge of Fact system and after meeting with Roelof Troskie the 1st Club Mykonos Gymkhana was held in July 1999. Initial plans was to host a single event annually for a maximum of 30 cars. Well, the opening event attracted an entry of 57 cars and ran almost till dark! After 30 events at Club Mykonos Langebaan the event became the best of its kind in South Africa with competitors travelling from Gauteng to compete. Catering for almost anything with wheels some very interesting combinations developed with Werner "The Mayor of Mykonos" and his BMW possibly one of the most popular combinations in any form of motorsport. With the integrity of the timing, judging and scoring established the series expanded with events held in Vredendal, Worcester, Wolseley, Vredenburg, Piketberg, Bredasdorp and the WBMK Gymkhana Championship suddenly saw purpose built machinery taking the competition into top gear. Sadly, as with all sport the series faced the evolution of development and regular venues could no longer be visited. The senior officials got to retirement age and the current pandemic added further frustration. Fortunately Abdul Sayed stepped forward and gradually the gymkhana series is once again gaining momentum with regular events at the Killarney International Raceway and a new team finding their feet with respect to presentation of successful events. With more than 140 events behind the WBMK the future looks promising with an enthusiastic team accepting the challenge. -- Thank you for watching this video.
