Professor Gavin Williams spoke on the 16th of October for CPSARA, the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health and the Australian Physiotherapy Association. Prof Gavin Williams PhD FACP APAM, is a clinician-researcher who has worked in neurological rehabilitation for over 25 years and the inaugural Professor of Physiotherapy Rehabilitation. In this role, Gavin works clinically in the neurological rehabilitation unit at 0.5FTE and in a research role at 0.5FTE. Gavin began working at the Epworth Hospital 24 years ago and has developed a program to teach advanced gait and running skills to people with neurological injuries. His postdoctoral studies helped him to develop a tool for people with traumatic brain injuries, the HiMAT (‘The development of a high-level mobility assessment tool (HiMAT) for people with traumatic brain injury’). Since then, he has become a world leader in the assessment, classification and treatment of mobility limitations following traumatic brain injury. He was also involved in the development of a new classification system for Paralympic athletics which was implemented at the London Paralympics. Gavin was awarded a Fellowship to the Australian College of Physiotherapists in 2011.
