Contemporary Dance | Shobana Jeyasingh | Outlander

The video presents some excerpts of a site-specific performance created and choreographed by Shobana Jeyasingh for the unique space of the Palladian Refectory of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, where a special facsimile of Veronese painting Wedding at Cana can be admired on the end wall. The original is kept at Louvre, but was conceived for that space, the refectory of Benedictine monks. The audience sits on the long sides of the Refectory, as the monks once did. Three dancers, Avatâra Ayuso, Sunbee Han, and Sooraj Subramaniam dialogue with the space and the painting, performing on a specially designed catwalk lit by Sander Loonen and with a baroque inspired soundscape by Scanner. Declares Shobana Jeyasingh in the programme notes prepared by Vito Di Bernardi: «Veronese’s bold depiction of his times and manners in a painting of a biblical story gave me the license not only to value the history of the room but also to stretch it to meet the present [...] The dancers and their language, I hope, will be both in and out of this location - insiders and “outlanders” at the same time». Outlander is a closely observed series of solos that shift between reflection and speed. Each dancer becomes a character who brings their own mixture of strangeness and familiarity to Veronese’s celebrations. The site-specific performance was a co-production of the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, and featured as a Special Event of the 10th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of La Biennale di Venezia.
