While about 90 per cent of the Australian population has access to fluoride in drinking water, only 72 per cent of Queenslanders do. Queensland councils have the power to decide whether their communities' drinking water should be fluoridated, and 51 of the state's 77 local government areas have no fluoridated drinking water supplies as a result. Other major centres without fluoridated water include Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Hervey Bay.
