The first 3D Action/Adventure-game Cryo Interactive created in 2000 with their Cryogen-engine. I was never a fan of it. Gone were the nice close-ups of characters, replaced by blocky 3D-characters with limited animation. Still, "The New Adventures of the Time Machine" was their biggest effort made with this new engine and they were still able to create a rich visual world with an interesting story behind it. The atmosphere is once again perfect, also because of the wonderful soundtrack. A lot of adventure gamers got scared because of the action-elements in it. Rightfully so, because they're quite unforgiving, partly because of poor design and execution. It shows that Cryo never got hold of good game-design. Objects you didn't found in the first half of the game (because nobody told you), you're going to miss in the second part. Which makes the game not unplayable but extremely difficult. True, it doesn't reach the deepest lows as in Cryo's earlier Dragon Lore II, but still... So, how lucky you are with this playthrough, fellow adventurer! Just watch all the good stuff pass by while leaving the bad gameplay to me... © Cryo Interactive Entertainment / Dreamcatcher Interactive Inc. === TECHNICAL NOTES I mounted my original DVD and eventually managed to play this game, with all its graphical bells and whistles, on Windows 10 with Virtual Box (with 3D-acceleration ON) and Ubuntu 17.04 (incl. WineHQ + PlayonLinux v. 4.2.6) installed on it. When configuring Wine, I used Windows 2000. That's the trick to get the 3D-acceleration working. Be sure not to install any DirectX-files when the installation game asks. And don't install DirectX9 on the virtual drive Wine creates for it. Otherwise characters will dissappear when activating the ingame-3D acceleration option. UPDATE 06/30/2019 There's a better way to play this game on windows 10. What I did: -Installed the CD-ROM version (in Win95-compatibility to get past an error at the end of the installation) NOTE: Don't install it in Program Files or Program Files (x86). The game starts automatically. Exit it. Installed the Cryo-patch which turns the game into v1.2: https://www.patches-scrolls.de/patch/... After that, I replaced the "TimeQuake.exe" file with the one dgVoodoo2-creator Dege put on his website and changes the game into v1.23 (scroll down on this page): http://dege.freeweb.hu/Patches/patches/ Downloaded dgVoodoo 2 here: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVo... From the MS-folder, copied the files D3D8.dll, d3dImm.dll, DDraw.dll into the game-folder. Copied 'dgVoodooCpl.exe' there as well. Double-click on it. Now you can fiddle around with the options. Go to DirectX-tab. Under videocard, choose "dgvoodoo Virtual 3D Accelerated Card." Go to General-tab: under "miscellanneous: choose "Keep Window aspect ratio." Click on apply and then ok. Launched the game, and under 'options' changed the resolution into 1024x768 px (anything higher will disable the Inventory- and Spell-menu's) Restarted the game, and under 'options' changed the Videocard to "Dgvoodoo DirectX" and changed 3D-acceleration to 'yes.' Play the game!
