Te Mata Peak, a Waterfall, and a Route Fail

This ride started with two fantastic scenic spots in Hawke's Bay before turning into a bit of a navigational adventure. First up, a ride up the iconic Te Mata Peak. It’s been a while since I was last up here, and despite the traffic, the views are just as stunning as ever. Next, I headed to Maraetotara Falls. The access has changed since my last visit (you now walk to the top rather than along the river), which makes it less ideal for photographs. However, the atmosphere was great - a group of locals were jumping off the falls into the pool below. They asked for some drone shots, and while I couldn't quite get into position in time to capture the perfect jump, it was awesome to see people enjoying the spot. The plan for the rest of the day was to explore gravel backroads down to Masterton. Unfortunately, my planned route hit a snag early on: a private road and a locked gate. Google Maps decided to reroute me onto sealed roads for the rest of the trip. It wasn't the gravel adventure I planned, but it was still a great day on the bike.
