The season opener at the Bahnpark Brugg 2025 in Swizerland (aka "Tag der offenen Tore") is a rare and exciting opportunity for railway enthusiasts and families alike to get up close with some of Switzerland’s most iconic locomotives. At this year’s event, a true highlight was the spectacular assembly of three legendary machines: the Xrot 100 steam rotary snowplow, the powerful C 5/6 2978 "Elefant" steam locomotive, and the iconic electric Ce 6/8 II 13254 "Krokodil." Watching these historic giants come together into one impressive combo was nothing short of breathtaking — a living tribute to over a century of Swiss railway engineering. The Xrot 100 is a historic Swiss steam-powered rotary snow blower, constructed in 1895 by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel, Germany, for the Gotthardbahn. It was the first of its kind on the Gotthard line, designed to clear heavy snowfalls and avalanches that frequently disrupted rail traffic. Weighing approximately 87 tons and featuring a 3-meter-diameter rotary blade, it could throw snow up to 18 meters high and 90 meters laterally. The Xrot 100 was not self-propelled; it was pushed by a powerful locomotive. It remained in service until 1981 and is now preserved in working condition at the Verkehrshaus der Schweiz (Swiss Museum of Transport) in Lucerne . In January 2021, the Xrot 100 was relocated from the museum to the Bahnpark Brugg for restoration, marking its 125th anniversary . The C 5/6 2978 is the last steam locomotive built for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), constructed in 1917 by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) in Winterthur. This locomotive is part of the C 5/6 class, known as the "Elephant" for its impressive size and power. With a weight of 128 tonnes and a length of 19.2 meters, it was designed for heavy freight duties, particularly on the steep inclines of the Gotthard route. The C 5/6 2978 was the final steam locomotive delivered to the SBB and was withdrawn from regular service in 1968. It was preserved and has been maintained in working order by SBB Historic. The SBB Ce 6/8 II 13254, famously known as the "Krokodil," is one of Switzerland’s most iconic electric locomotives. Built in the 1920s, its distinctive articulated design and long “snout-like” noses earned it the nickname “Crocodile.” Designed primarily for hauling heavy freight trains through the steep and winding Gotthard mountain route, the Krokodil became a symbol of Swiss engineering excellence and reliability. Many of these locomotives have been preserved and celebrated as historic treasures. #steamlocomotive #locomotive #locomotivepower #railfan
