At its peak, Western Electric’s Hawthorne Works in Cicero, Illinois employed *45,000 workers* inside a factory complex larger than many cities. The plant built the telephone infrastructure that connected America and even had its own hospital, railroad, fire department, and bank. It was also the birthplace of the *Hawthorne Effect* — the discovery that workers change their behavior when they know they are being observed. After the **1984 breakup of AT&T**, the factory slowly closed and was demolished by the late 1980s. Today, the site is a **shopping mall**, with only a single water tower left as the last reminder of the industrial giant that once stood there. #hawthorneworks #westernelectric #industrialhistory #chicagohistory #americanmanufacturing #businessempires #documentary
