More Korean consumers choosing organic alternatives for chemical-based products

늘어나는 "노케미족"의 천연제품 선택 People in Korea have become highly suspicious of the chemicals in their household and cosmetic products, following the deadly Oxy humidifier disinfectant scandal. As a result,... a growing number of local consumers are taking no chances, opting for natural alternatives and even making some of their own. Oh Soo-young reports. A growing number of Korean consumers is swearing off chemical-based household and cosmetic products in favor of organic alternatives. The public has become distrustful of chemical products following a national scandal involving toxic humidifier disinfectants made by Oxy, known as Reckitt Benckiser Korea,... which left at least 140 dead and made hundreds more seriously ill. Major online and offline retailers say sales of detergents and household cleaning products containing chemicals have plunged in recent months. But natural cleaning products and ingredients have been flying off the shelves. One handy smartphone app that's already helping concerned consumers... lists thousands of cosmetic products, from lipsticks and creams to wet wipes, showing which substances are used and how hazardous they are. "We have more than two-and-a-half million users. There was a huge rise in membership this year, with almost 200-thousand people joining each month." As consumers become more watchful,... some are seeking DIY solutions offered through special workshops or department store courses. "The items people once trusted have been shown to irritate their skin time and time again. So they come here to learn safe and easy ways of using organic ingredients. The number of students has recently tripled." From detergents and scents to makeup and sunscreen,... natural oils and substances are combined to create wholesome, homemade products. "My skin is very sensitive so I have to be careful. But these organic products are very gentle. So even if it's a hassle, I'll continue to make my own skincare products I can trust." While organic homemade formulas may seem less harmful than chemical products,... experts say people should still be careful when testing them at home. "Even natural substances can be toxic sometimes. So, unless you have a clear understanding of the ingredients, you can't be absolutely sure your final product will be safe." With the rise of these so-called "chemical-free consumers", or in Korean, experts say the time is ripe for stronger guidelines for manufacturers and a wider disclosure of information on chemicals that's quick and easy to understand.
